“How did Kate come to start up a gin-making business?” Garrett asked as Jules put a plate of steaming stew in front of him. The enormous wooden dining table stood in front of a massive window, and beyond the insulated panes, heavy snowflakes danced on the wind.

He’d never known darkness like this: it was complete, stygian, horror-movie black.

He rather liked it.

Garrett watched as Jules, after putting a plate of homemade bread between them, took her place next to him so that she could also, he presumed, look out onto the night.

She’d slept for about an hour, and strangely, he’d been happy to hold her, enjoying the quietness, letting his thoughts roll in and out, not feeling the need to solve any problems or plot strategy. He might even have dozed off, but if anyone asked, he’d deny that with his dying breath. He never napped. It wasn’t what a constantly-on-the-go workaholic did.

Hell, Jules had a way of making him step out of the normal and embrace the...unexpected.

He didn’t accompany acquaintances to ranches high in the Rockies to try and save a stranger’s family farm. He didn’t muck about in stables in the bitter cold. He didn’t hold a woman while she slept.

Jules had the strangest effect on him.

“Before she met and married Peta, Kate was in a long-term relationship. He hated ranch life, she loathed the city and they quickly realized they were better off living apart. Seth bought a house in Denver, and Kate spent nights and weekends with him there,” Jules explained, leaning back in her seat. The wide neck of her sweater exposed her shoulder and the strap of that lacy bra. He recognized that brand of lingerie. Their items were gloriously feminine, custom-made and brutally expensive.

Vouchers to order off the brand’s online shop made excellent thanks-for-the-fling-we’re-over gifts.

Garrett pulled his attention back to his earlier question and told himself to concentrate.

“They did marry at some point, shortly before I met her, I think. Seth owned a company making craft gin, and built up a small name for himself online and at gourmet-food markets. He named the company after Kate. He called her his crazy, wild child.”

“So she wasn’t always gay?”

Jules shrugged. “Kate told me that she’s always been sexually fluid, more attracted to the mind than the body. Seth was an artist, a hippy, and from all accounts, he made her happy,” Jules explained, after taking a couple bites of stew. “I never knew Seth but I think I would have liked him.”

He followed her lead and sighed at the explosion of flavors on his tongue. “God, this is good.”

“Kate can cook,” Jules agreed. “Anyway, I was in my late teens when Seth was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. He died six weeks later.”

Garrett stared at her, aghast. “That’s quick.”

“So quick. She was heartbroken.”

“So to honor him, she took over his craft-gin company,” Garrett said.

Jules took a bite of bread and waved her hand from left to right. “Sort of. She became a recluse for six months, maybe more.
